Iron Mountain Hike - Neota Wilderness

A moderate hike with breathtaking views of four wilderness areas and RMNP, all from the summit of Iron Mountain in the Neota Wilderness.

Join 15 hikers as we start on the Trap Park trail in the Neota Wilderness. After 30 minutes we'll climb a ridge to the north and navigate through a continuous alpine country, making our way to the top of Iron Mountain. Most of this hike will be off trail. You'll learn how to navigate safely and boldly both on and off trail while avoiding lightning and hypothermia. There will be a pre-trip video that covers how this route was created along with the Ten Essentials every hiker and backpacker should have. The Neota Wilderness has only 1.5 miles of designated trail. To experience this wilderness you'll need the skills, confidence and gear to explore safely and boldly. You'll want to be in decent shape for this all day hike. Although most of the hike will be moderate, there will be a few steep sections. There are no technical sections. The green line in the image below shows the route from the Trap Lake parking lot on the Long Draw Road.
